GIRO DEL MONVISO IN BICI
DAL 5 AL 9 LUGLIO 2022 + DAL 30 AGOSTO AL 3 SETTEMBRE
GIRO DEL MONVISO IN BICI - 5 giorni
Tour in bici su strada alla scoperta delle mitiche salite del Tour de France e del Giro d'Italia.
PROGRAM
1st day: meeting of the participants, room assignment, free dinner and overnight stay in the selected structure.
2nd day: from the characteristic town of Saluzzo, rich in traditions and charm, we go up towards Chianale. Immediately after this village, with its stone and wooden houses, the climb to Colle dell'Agnello begins; it is a 10 km climb made particularly difficult by the gradient, which in some sections exceeds 14%, and by the absence of shade. The hill, at 2744 meters above sea level, represents the second Italian road passage for altitude and the third in Europe after the Iseran and the Stelvio. Second stage of the day, the ascent to the legendary Colle Izoard (15.9 km - 6.9% average gradient - 10.5% maximum gradient), which boasts the record of passages in the Tour de France and the Giro d ' Italy. You make the ascent through the famous Casse Desert, to descend to Briançon, the ancient capital of the Republic of the Escartons.
3rd day: two other exceptional hills: Colle del Vars and Colle della Bonnette. The initial part of the climb to Colle del Vars is not too demanding: wide road, with an average gradient of 6%, with a maximum of 10%. After 14 km of descent on the side of the Alpes de Haute Provence, follow the road of the Ubaye valley to the village of Jausiers. From here begins the endless ascent to Colle della Bonnette, the highest route in Europe (2,715 meters, 6.6% average gradient - 9% maximum gradient). The descent into the Tinée Valley takes place in an extremely wild alpine environment.
4th day: as the previous day, we start pedaling hard, with the ascent to Colle della Lombarda (2,351 meters, 6.8% average gradient - 9.3% maximum gradient), the alpine border hill that connects the Valle della Tinée in the Maritime Alps and the Stura Valley of Demonte (Italy). The next descent takes us back to Italy, on a winding road in the wild valley of Sant'Anna that allows us to reach the capital of the Stura Valley, Vinadio, a town protected by its "Albertine" fortifications, commissioned by the Dukes of Savoy. A few kilometers later, in Demonte, you begin the long climb up to Colle dei Morti or Colle Fauniera located at 2,481 meters above sea level. 25 km of ascent between meadows and high altitude pastures until you reach a more rugged and austere alpine scenery finally offering a view of the "Cima Coppi" where the statue of Marco Pantani, the prematurely dead cycling champion, has been erected for some years in 2004, which honored his fans with extraordinary successes, even on these climbs.
5th day: for the last day we allow ourselves a little relaxation. Only one climb: that of Colle di Sampeyre which, from the bottom of the Maira Valley, climbs to 2,283 meters on a lonely road that offers extraordinary views of the Alps. You can see some breathtaking features: the church of Sampeyre which stands out thanks to its bell tower a stone spire and the town of San Martino, located on a ledge overlooking a precipice. The descent along the Varaita Valley brings us back to Saluzzo, the starting point of our tour. The sight of the city alone repays the effort! The artistic and cultural heritage of the Marquises of Saluzzo (Middle Ages) is still evident in the local architecture: numerous castles and numerous noble houses to be admired in the medieval alleys. The streets of Saluzzo are dotted with historic buildings and ancient churches, where tourists flock to also taste the local gastronomy, which draws its origins from the orchards and breeding of cattle such as the Fassona and the Piemontese.
